Ivory

Ivory is a natural shade of off-white with a soft, subtle hint of yellow, named for the material that forms elephant tusks. According to the 1930 publication A Dictionary of Color, the word was first used to describe this particular color in the English language in 1385. As a warmer, richer alternative to stark white, ivory is a popular choice for wedding gowns. Paler women who feel that winter white washes out their complexion can opt for this creamier version, while those with olive or dark complexions appreciate the contrast of a pure white. When adding jewelry to an off-white dress in this hue, go with gold jewelry to enhance the color’s warm undertones. This shade is frequently used in home decor for its connotations of purity and cleanliness. When using this shade of white in the home, earth tones such as light blues, browns, and greens create a relaxing effect. It can also be used as a counterpoint to offset jewel tones and rich colors like teal, royal purple, emerald, indigo, and burnt orange. This color exudes elegance when combined with deep, dark colors like forest green, chocolate brown, charcoal, and navy. This neutral also looks beautiful when added to natural elements such as wood and stone. Make sure that these materials have a yellow undertone to create a cohesive look.
